It’s truly amazing how a dinner with my Christian In-laws can start with praying to God, but end in an argument about why slavery was ok.

Slavery was totally cool in the Bible. So was rape.

Jesus was a socialist, he’d say fuck that shit even though the Bible condones slavery

How is hiring Mexicans different?!?! You’re fucking _HIRING_ them! A slave is someone you _OWN!_ And I hate when they rattle out that “indentured servitude” bullshit. They cherry-pick certain verses that aren’t as bad, but completely ignore the shit about how you can own people for life as your property, and beat them to within an inch of their life as long as they don’t die within the first two days of the beating. God not only explicitly sanctions the owning of other human beings as property, he sanctions murder, genocide, rape, incest, executing homosexuals, executing rebellious kids who don’t obey their parents, and many other abhorrent things that no one in their right mind should defend, excuse or flat-out ignore, and then try to claim their god is “loving and good”, simply because there are other verses which are all bubble-gummy and talk about love. You can’t just throw out the parts you don’t like and keep the ones you do! And the worst part is, they fight tooth and nail to defend the bible, and it’s just a fictional book full of fables. It’s not real! In fact, it’s _demonstrably_ false! I don’t claim to know whether there is or isn’t a god, no one could possibly know that. I’m not going to believe in something which there’s no evidence to support. But if the god in the bible _did_ exist – the insecure, narcissistic, murderous psychopath that he is – why the fuck would I want to worship him?! If I found out he was real, I _might_ bow down to him, but it would be strictly out of fear of burning in hell for eternity, not out of respect. In truth, that god doesn’t deserve worship, he’s pure fucking evil. I’m so glad I don’t have any family who are super religious. I just can’t find a way to fully respect people who believe religion is a good thing. I get that many of them were indoctrinated, and I understand it’s difficult for those people to see the truth and deprogram, but contradicting themselves and being intellectually dishonest to defend things they know are immoral and cruel, just makes my skin crawl. Rant over.

>”It’s the same thing as me going to hire Mexicans to do my yard work. Tell me the difference.” Well, I don’t do yard work except for my own and family or friends in need of assistance. But supposing he did hire me and he tried to treat me the way slaves were treated, it would be the second to last choice he ever made.

“Whenever I hear some bigmouth in Washington or the Christian heartland banging on about the evils of sodomy or whatever, I mentally enter his name in my notebook and contentedly set my watch. Sooner rather than later, he will be discovered down on his weary and well-worn old knees in some dreary motel or latrine, with an expired Visa card, having tried to pay well over the odds to be peed upon by some Apache transvestite.” – Christopher Hitchens
