Something that many people don’t understand about the South is that there is rampant “economic slavery” in rural areas. When you live in a small town where four while families own EVERYTHING in the town, you either do what they say or you don’t work. Or buy food. Because of a lack of public transportation, it’s often difficult to move around and many people are just stuck in their situation.

Stephen Fry spent Thanksgiving with a family that bragged how none of their slaves left the plantation after emancipation. How strange I thought, a group of people with no education, no money and no skills outside of their jobs on the plantation who weren’t racing out into an unknown world to seek their fortunes.

Man, racism in my country (UK) is bad, and some of the things said by members of the current government are totally abhorrent. But the US just seems to be in a league of its own sometimes. As an outsider, the last few weeks of news from the US has really been an eye opener.
