Telling someone “I want you to be happy” often makes them smile. Telling someone “I want you to smile” never makes them happy.

Because telling someone to smile isn’t for their benefit, it’s for yours.


It’s the difference between “I want you to *look* happy” and “I want you to *be* happy”.


Cause it’s the most condescending thing. If someone isn’t smiling they aren’t in a mood to smile.


I’m wondering how often men are told to smile by strangers. I’m assuming that it happens but at a fraction of the frequency it does to women.
