The Wikipedia article you linked seems to say that the term came about because of unscrupulous practices by missionaries to Asia. And yeah, if my options were to let my family starve, or to fake convert to Christianity, I know exactly what I’d be doing. And I know what y’all would be doing too.

In Macedonia there are people called “Torbeshi” which kinda translates to “Baggers”, not to be confused with “beggers”, as this word comes from the macedonian word for “bag”. The story behind it is that the Ottomans were offering “a bag of silver” for those who willingly switched from Christianity to Islam and these are the people who supposedly did so.
