“You can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into.” Although when I read this quote it was about flat-earthers, you can apply it to basically any irrational or contrarian position.

It’s really tempting to allow yourself to be enveloped by a strong group. In exchange for thinking for yourself and deducing right and wrong, you just need to follow the status quo of your leaders. After that, it’s very possible to have a very simple life without the burden of worrying about morality

It feels artificial to construe this as “not a bias.” Their definition of reasoning also doesn’t apparently account for unconscious cognition, which is kinda weird for a model claiming to exclude bias.

The convenience of selfish denial further fuels this train-wreck thought process. Truth pills can be sizable and difficult to swallow/process, especially if facts don’t align with foundational beliefs held by the lazy thinkers.

So it’s less about the lack of critical thinking skills and more about the lack of any thinking at all.
