Why are all the comment threads nuked so quickly?

Goddam I know this is mentioned on a lot of posts on r/space lately, but the whole “90% of comments on threads being jokes” is getting so tiresome lately. Almost feels like we need commenting rules similar to other subreddits where the replies need to be serious. This subreddit is great and the topics are truly out of this world, yet there’s virtually no serious discussion on any posts because they get brigaded with jokes.
