Perseverance is the 1st spacecraft in years to carry fresh US plutonium. It won’t be the last. If you want to explore the outer solar system, you need plutonium.

For smaller craft, definitely. But if we want to push spacecraft in the outer solar system into the multi-kilowatt range on electrical power (which would be tremendously useful), then it makes more sense to shift towards a small nuclear reactor than relying on Pu-238 RTGs.


But nuclear is eeeeeeevil! I only use wind and organic free range biomass for my spacecraft power!
