TIL just before lethal hypothermia, a person will undress themselves because they perceive themselves to be burning up when indeed they’re freezing (paradoxical undressing). Consequently people frozen to death are often found naked and misidentified as a victim of a violent crime.

It’s because we priotize our “core”. We constrict blood vessels in our extremities. This pushes less blood to them and keeps the warmth in our torso. That’s why frost bite starts at the fingers and toes. But it takes effort to do that. When it’s bad enough the body can’t keep it up so all those blood vessels diate back to normal. Sending “warm” blood out to your arms and legs after theyre already frostbite makes them feel like they’re on fire. Even thou they’re still way below a safe temperature. It’s that rapid change that cause paradoxical undressing.

Early stage hypothermia involves excessive urination. Therefore if you’re ever in cold temps and start urinating out of proportion to your hydration intake, it’s important to take quick action. There’s a point with hypothermia where you stop having sound judgment, and it’s all luck after that.

I too just learned about this recently while reading a book about the Dinner Party. What a harrowing experience that was. I’m amazed anyone survived… Edit: Donner Party
