Buried deep inside that complexity somewhere is that name I can’t remember

The title is misleading/wrong. They have not “discovered the basic mechanism behind how the brain encodes memories through a complex network composed of neurons and synaptic connections” that would be immense. Instead, it looks like they have made some progress in understanding how the location of an engram is chosen, i.e. how it is decided which neurons become involved in storing which memories. To be clear, we don’t know how our brain encodes memories, we have correlates of memory encoding in the building of neuronal connections but poor understanding of how the memory is actually coded.

Is this when companies create fake memories to make you like their products?

This paper may be very interesting for Machine Learning / AI. Memorizing data while inferring neural networks is a crucial step towards sequential artificial general intelligence
