TIL the summit of Mount St Helens, when it erupted in 1980, was actually private property owned by the Burlington Northern railroad. Subsequently, they donated the 650 acres of land (now a vast crater) to the US Forest Service.

Did they technically own the bottom of the crater? The air above the crater? 🤷‍♂️ Would love to hear an insurance claims adjusters thoughts haha


My mom worked for Burlington Northern at that time and got to fly over Mount Saint Helens shortly after it erupted. She was with some of the higher up bosses and said the whole time she was just focused on trying not to puke because, well small planes.


Question, are they liable for the damaged if they didn’t?
