Liquid sodium boils at a much higher temp than water. Reactors blow up when the water gets super heated and expands (due to pumps shutting off or some other issue). Sodium allows for reactors that can be deactivated and allowed to cool on their own without (high) risk of explosion. Not a physicist, watched a Nova special once, someone help me out.
