TIL that Andre Geim won the Ignobel prize in 2000 for levitating a frog and then won the Nobel prize in 2010 for his work on Graphene. He is the only person to win both awards.

Remember that while the Ig Nobel Prizes are sometimes meant to poke fun at something, they’re more commonly used to reward real research that is simply unusual. The stated goal is to make people laugh then think – not to mock people’s work as stupid or bad (usually).

That’s the great thing about science. All the trial and error, hypothesis and experimentation leads to both the profound and weird. Watson and Crick’s first DNA design looks like something that wouldn’t be out of place in a Picasso exhibit. And there’s plenty of discoveries that happened by accident. So good for him for sciencing.

He was speaking at a conference I was at last year (virtual conference) and wow you could just tell how smart he was by how he spoke. I guess all academics are supposed to be at least a little smart, but he was on another level. Iirc he was talking about his work on 2D slits in 3D materials.
