I’ve actually read of a 10 year old girl who was married to a guy in his 30’s.

Most US states still allow some form of child marriage, it’s not deferring to religious laws, it has not been made illegal. America is very good at pretending to be a moral country.

|It is most common in West Virginia and Texas, where about seven of every 1,000 15- to 17-year-olds were married in 2014 14 girls in a 2000 person high school… that’s.. just wow. ok humanity.. never change(or pretend you will, cause thats all we ever get)

This is why access to healthcare, access to jobs, birth control, access to education, etc is so important. An independent woman doesn’t need to rush into a marriage. It’s also not just the moral thing to do, but these women are untapped economic producers. Something like 20% of our economic growth over the past 40 years has been attributed to opening up opportunities for women and people of color. Imagine if that didn’t just happen in progressive parts of the country
