What the hell?! I just paid taxes last year?!?!

Annual reminder to start the regular reminders: **do not pay TurboTax to file your taxes**. There are plenty of free options, even if you are self employed and have to file Schedule Cs or have investment income. is my go-to.

> The IRS’s Free File program allows taxpayers who made $73,000 or less in 2021 to file their taxes electronically for free using software provided by commercial tax filing companies. More information will be available on Free File later this week. I have always earned less than the cap, but not by a ton. Every year, there are usually only one or two total versions of software available to me free, because there are usually other riders attached: veteran status, under or over a certain age, extra income restrictions, etc. The “free file” program is frustrating to say the least.

Maybe I’ll get my 2020 refund before then!

It should be noted that you should file electronically if at all possible. If you mail a paper return it may not get processed for months. That’s right I said months. I sent a letter to the IRS in August asking them to correct a mistake they made and they still haven’t actioned it. I called a couple times and apparently they have a cartoonish level of backlog on paper stuff now. If you have a refund and you want it quickly you better file electronically.
