Public servants shouldn’t be in the business of private profits. They should be invested only in blind trusts and then work to improve the country as a whole if they want their investments to thrive, not just the handful they personally feel the strongest about.

At best, they should be able to invest in a total US stock market index fund. If you’re in public service, your financial success should be tied to serving the public well. If I do poorly in my job, I lose my income. If they do poorly in their jobs, they make money off of selling stocks that are about to fall and buying stocks that are about to spike. That ain’t okay.

>it is obvious to the American people that they should not be allowed to trade individual stocks and then vote on laws that affect those companies,” wrote Warren It is obvious. It would be a form of self-dealing: of course lawmakers would vote to help companies they have stock in, even if it’s not for the best interest of the country. It’s lazy and blatant corruption.

Awesome. while we’re addressing obvious things, can we do away with legislatures drawing their own congressional districts? And tax preparing companies making it harder/more expensive to pay our taxes? And eliminate for-profit health insurance companies?
