Tldr: Paraguay went to war with Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Paraguay got trounced, but decided to keep fighting a ruinous guerilla campaign. The end result was the death of 65% of the total Paraguayan population and as much as 90% of the country’s male population.

Also pretty based for his time: “…it is time for the public to hear that the giant evil and danger in this country, the danger which transcends all others, is the vast wealth owned or controlled by a few persons.”

This TIL is just wrong. John Quincy Adams was the first president to lose the popular vote and win the electoral vote, in 1824.

I remember him because when his presidential dollar coin came out, I was working the night shift and the only change machine nearby gave coins and not bills. So trying to get change for a twenty was always very annoying. I tended to stockpile the coins because of my very unhealthy Monster habit, and had at least thirty Rutherford b Hayes coins in my desk, and was laughing my ass off about it every time I needed a drink.
