Is this a mystery? They do this for the same reason they exclude things like energy: To prop up ever-increasing government deficit spending, and to continually finance it with low interest rates. If they were at all interested in honesty, they’d still give us the early 1980 value, along with their new calculations.

I think what we are seeing over the past 20 Or so years is that gulf between wealth and everyone else widening so much, that the capitalist economy is starting to roll over on itself. Capital, money, has become so common, yet concentrated, and wages paid has failed to keep up with expected “returns” On that capital invested, that bubbles must be blown through more money printing and QE, with regularity.
