Lower than I expected

I’m honestly not surprised it’s so low. Convict ships had largely stopped arriving by the mid 1850s, and at that point the white Australian population was barely 300,000. Not all of these 300,000 were convicts either – many were either part of the colonial administration or were free settlers. Also, a lot of Australians only arrived following World War II. The Australian population doubled from 7 million to 14 million between 1946 and 1976 largely thanks to migrants from war-torn Europe, and later places like Vietnam and China. I’m Australian, and I don’t have any convict ancestors. My first family member arrived from Ireland in the early 1900s, and married into a family of Scottish immigrants. My other three grandparents all came to Australia in the 1960s – one from Germany, one from Yugoslavia, and one from Iran.

Would be a higher percentage but the Australian gold rush brought more folks to the gene pool

I would’ve thought it would be higher.

And they managed to build a first world country. Good job Australia.
